Dr Kevin Urama appointed as a member of the UNEP Resource Panel for Sustainable Natural Resources Management
The 4th meeting of the Resource Panel in Paris, France from June 2 – 4, 2009. The meeting saw the appointment of Dr Kevin Urama as a member of the UNEP Resource Panel for Sustainable Natural Resources Management.
Dr Urama was appointed to lead the scoping group report on Sustainable Water Management at a global scale. This is welcome news for ATPS as his nomination follows his (and ATPS’) involvement in the just concluded program on Water and Environmental Sustainability (ATPS-WESP, 2004 – 2008); and also his previous work on water management both in Africa and in Europe.
The Resource Panel assesses sustainable resource management at the global level, focusing on cross-cutting themes and specific sectors, for example metal recycling or the complex issue of bio-based products. The Panel applies integrated and life cycle based approaches (as compared to ‘one issue’ initiatives) and has a pragmatic way of working. Assessments consider many dimensions of resource efficiency, including economic and environmental perspectives. Different resource types are considered, with a broad definition encompassing renewable and non-renewable ones.
The next Panel meeting was Beijing, China from November 9 – 11, 2009.More details on the resource panel can be found at:http://www.unep.fr/scp/rpanel/
