The project titled Using Artificial Intelligence to Enhance the Production, Management, and Marketing of Nsukka Yellow Pepper (Capsicum Chinense Nsukkadrilus) is spearheaded by Engr Prof. Chinenye Anyadike. The project aims to leverage artificial intelligence tools and applications to enhance the economic viability of Nsukka yellow pepper by collecting datasets on NYP for early pest detection, providing support for early soil nutrient loss detection, improving water conservation through a smart irrigation system, and providing e-extension service support in adapting and mitigating risks faced in production and improving access to the market, thus increasing the NYP value chain. The project will adopt the participatory action research approach in co-developing and deploying responsible artificial intelligence soil monitoring, smart irrigation, and an integrated e-extension service and marketing application for overcoming the problems identified.
Enhancing Nsukka Yellow Pepper Farming with AI
The Project Principal Investigator for this initiative is Dr. Patrick Kwabena Mensah, a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Computer Science & Informatics, University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) in Ghana. Leading the team, he played a crucial role in developing a deep learning (DL)--based mobile (Android/iOS) and web app for the efficient detection of pests and diseases in cassava, maize, tomatoes, and cashew plants. The DL models will be trained on Google Colab to minimize carbon footprint, utilizing both healthy and sick plant images. These models will then be integrated into a mobile app using the Tensor Flow lite framework, contributing to the enhancement of farmers' livelihoods in Ghana.
